The B.A.C. Re-Building/Fundraising Committee

Dear All

As you may be aware, the legendary Bulawayo Athletic Club bar and billiard room has burnt down.

We need help to rebuild. This help could take the form of a donation in cash (see below), in kind, providing us with memorabilia, or by simply passing this mail on to whomever you consider appropriate.

Although the fire was attended to by the Bulawayo fire Brigade, a large part of this historic club was destroyed by the fire which was believed to have been started by an electrical fault. Over 100 years of Athletic events have taken place at this club, one of the very first sports clubs in Bulawayo formed in 1894. The Club has for a century offered cricket, tennis, bowls, squash, hockey and billiards and was a significant venue for many international sporting events. We are the second test venue in Bulawayo.

We have decided that we will get the club restored as soon as possible in terms of a four phase reconstruction:

  • Phase 1 - make good the damage to the cocktail bar so that the engine room of the clubs finances is up and running. This includes permanent reconnection of water and electricity.

  • Phase 2 - extend the cocktail bar into the walk-through passage and onto the verandah;

  • Phase 3 - roof and make good the main bar and snooker room (the rains are hopefully coming!);

  • Phase 4 - refurbish the interiors of the main bar and snooker room.

Thanks to the generous donations made by some members and a members levy of a minimum of one million dollars, we are already well into phase 1, but in order to fund the balance of the reconstruction, we need donations in cash and kind and are therefore appealing to you for help.

For members levys and local donations we have a trust account at Datvest administered by Mike Harvey of Ernst and Young building in Bulawayo.

For foreign donations outside of South Africa we have a trust account at Baobab Trustees in Switzerland. As bank charges are very high in Europe, we suggest that cheques be mailed to P O Box 8095, Belmont, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. They will be collated and couriered to Zuruich.
